Works in the dojo honbu

This past summer was spent with a lot of work here at the honbu dojo. Several practitioners and I spent over a month working to improve the space, creating changing rooms for men and women. You can check out these works through the photographic reportage on our Facebook and also on the news at IwamaNews.

Unfortunately, we are still finishing the women's locker room that we hope will be ready this month of October so we can also make the water connection, which will finally allow us, besides the locker rooms, to also have all the showers running at 100%. Don't you forget, however, that until then you may use both showers and WCs present in the laundry area, plus to the visit's toilet located on the access ramp to the dojo.

Portuguese Federation of Aikido

This year we joined the Portuguese Federation of Aikido. This entry was, in a way, forced due to the present sports politics. Aikido is not a sport and never will be and the entrance to the FPA transforms this Way into a simple sport full of rules and regulations. An authentic nightmare for a sincere practitioner of Aikido.

To continue to openly train and pass the teachings of the Founder of Aikido and our great Master Saito we only had a remedy: to follow the rules imposed by the government / European Community. Another way would be to close the dojos and that let each one follow their way, which would not be wrong at all.

I apologize to all practitioners but there was no other way. Aikido will suffer from all this. I only hope that everyone continues to practice sincerely, always with the sense of research that characterizes Iwama Ryu.

Do not forget to check the schedule and prices at the honbu dojo and comply with medical examinations for sports so that our Association will always be an example of honesty and sincerity to all other groups. Annual membership fees and other fees are mandatory for all groups, dojos and practitioners APASD. I know that many practitioners will stop training for the medical examinations are far too expensive, especially in this time of crisis. I am sorry to let you know that I cannot do anything about this.

Thank you everyone and "ganbatte!"

Tristão da Cunha

New Season Changes

The big change this season is the obligation of the Sports Medical examination to validate the Sports Insurance.

The exam will be conducted at the Centers for Sports Medicine or filled by a qualified physician using the appropriate forms. In Honbu dojo these forms will be available for those who need. To residents in Lisbon it is suggested to schedule and appointment at the Sports Medicine Centre of Lisbon situated at the University Stadium. Please contact our Secretary for more information at: apasdsecretaria@gmail.com

The medical appointment has a cost and it includes the required exams. For athletes of less than or equal to 35 years the query is priced at € 15 euros; for veterans 35 years and older, the value is € 99.10.

This value may be reduced to 15 euros if you bring the Cardiac Stress Test and clinical analysis to the Center. Please contact the Center, using the telephone number 21 795 40 00 for more detailed information.

We wish you a great time and good training.

Cheers to all,

It is Christmas time again.

Christmas is a time of the year when all rejoice and this happens because there is a family spirit and friendship present.

It is true that this season is criticized because, mostly from the twentieth century on, it is associated with a commercialism that destroys the true Christmas spirit.

This is true. But the following is also true: We all have the duty to thank each other. We have the duty to be grateful for what we got from others. Phrases like "I did more for him than he did for me" demonstrate an unhealthy mental meanness, which will impede the development of a pure friendship. Because we have a duty to be grateful and thankful and because this recognition and gratitude is something that is always connected to love - whether between family members or between friends - we use this time ofthe year to show all these entities whom we want and to whom we owe, a bit of our appreciation, through small gifts, that are nothing more than a tiny way to say to others: "I thought of you.”

Even so, it would be much more practical and much more pleasant to receive a visit, a call, a jam made by oneself, a cake, etc.. than buying to give.

The demonstration that we think of someone on a special day is also a demonstration that this person is always present in our minds. Not just in that day. And this is good.

Grudges. At the end of the year we always do a great cleaning the dojo. This cleaning also has a spiritual purpose: to clean up our heart. It's easier said than done, I know.

But just the thought that we should purify our hearts of the hatred we have for someone, is already a big step and a great help in cleansing our hearts. Better yet, would be to try to renew friendships with those who are angry with us or with whom we are upset. This does not always mean that one will lose oneÂ’s position and that we will become undermined in relation to some argument or position that has led to the creation of this burden of resentment that was carried during the year. No. The positions we take, if they are logical and honest from our point of view, are to be kept. But maintaining a position is one thing and hating someone because his position is different from ours, is quite another.

The Love. When it comes to love, men think " lame..... " Women think "how cute", "how sensitive." Men, make no mistake: you love too and you love not only your girl friend or wife or your mother. You love your father, your brother; you love your male friend too. There's no shame here. Rather, there is a rare courage that comes when we accept that what we feel is really love. The path of the founder of Aikido, Budo, is love. Ai means harmony. But love in Japanese is also read Ai. We are talking about a Budo. There is no shame or inferiority to recognize and accept this. Women have an easier time recognizing that they love, but many will feel a great spite when they find out that those whom they love so much do not love the same way back. They must also nurture the courage to conquer these feelings that have nothing to, after all, with love.

The Perfect Way. We all follow different paths. All of them are individual. Those who are attached to traditional martial arts and in this case, to Aikido, feel that we have a path to follow. And so we search for our " Perfect Way.“ The Perfect Way cannot be followed if it is not full of love and friendship and, of course, mutual comprehension and understanding.

I wish everyone a Delightfully Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart; I want you to see this as a great gift that I really want to give you. My wish is that each one of you can walk safely on/in your Perfect Way, a path full of love, the creatorof everlasting friendship.

May your training be the indicator of your inner development.

I will also try to give this gift to myself.

Merry Christmas to all and, if we do not see each other until January, a Happy New Year too.
